Applying For Your First Physiotherapy Job

These guidelines are to be used in conjunction with the video posted on YouTube on the channel
Use the support offered by your university! They help students with job applications and interviews every year, so they have a lot of experience with this stuff.
Your university will run sessions on applying for Band 5 jobs and even mock interviews so take them up and practice with them.
Check out @generation AHP on Instagram. They have created some superb stories that cover interviews
Look out for open days at the trust you’re applying for or even better contact them and ask if you can come to look around.
Use this to find out what the trust is up to, research trials, new departments, new services etc. This will help your statement and your interview.

Look up the trust website, look for tabs such as latest news, research and what’s going on.
Look up the latest CQC report for the trust.
How did not do and why?
If areas needed improvement what are they doing about it, and does it relate to physio services at all?

(Most areas of the hospital link to physio in someway).
Talk to students that have just graduated and are working in the trust. What can they tell you about it.

Find out what the physio rotations are.
What are the trust values and vision?
Learn it off by heart.
Think about what it mean to you as a potential physio.
Do you agree with it? Why? Do you see yourself wanting to follow it?

personal statement

It is exactly that! It’s personal!
It should reflect you and your skills, experiences and show the trust why they need you in their team.

Never copy or use other people’s statements even for ideas.
They want to be interested in reading your statement so making it the same as all the rest won’t help keep the short listers awake!
Use the person specification to guide your structure and the examples you give.
Focus on examples to back up your statements Use real examples. Written well they’ll automatically cover lots of the person specification

Don’t be afraid to use examples outside of physio and placement.
If you’ve dealt with situations as part of a sports team or in a volunteer role then this may make you’re personal statement personal!

The Interview

An interview is a two way process. It’s a chance for you to tell them how great you are and give some detailed examples of experiences you’ve had.
TRY AND ENJOY IT!
Arrive early!
If there’s a practical assessment check the interview invitation to see if they would like you to wear uniform.
Dress to impress. Don’t underestimate the power of first impressions. Look smart. Show them that you’ve taken the time to look your best.

Smile and be yourself. Remember they want you!
If you’re nervous it’s probably because this means a lot to you. That’s what they’re looking for. They want people who want them and want to be a physio. Chill......
You can’t prepare for specific questions you might be asked! There are far too many variations to prepare for.
Prepare some examples of working as a team, for the patient.
Patients centered care is often a thing!

Remember you’re applying for a Band 5 position not a specialist Band 7!
You’re not expected to know everything, in fact the opposite.
They want to see that you recognise the limit of your knowledge and that you are confident enough to ask for help from seniors.
They need to know you’ll be safe.

What My Patients Are Saying

I can’t thank James enough. He always explains so informatively and is extremely thorough with his consultations. I always know I am in safe hands and can always ask any questions. I always leave feeling so positive and with knowledge on how I’m moving forward. The follow up emails reminding me of what exercises I need to do and extra information are invaluable. I thoroughly recommend.
