pOSTURE...
It’s a common myth and widely held belief that we must sit a certain way or stand perfectly upright.
Well you’ll be pleased to know that actually there’s next to no evidence that one posture reduces pain over another. The best posture is the one that is most comfy for you at that particular time. Some say the best posture is the next posture i.e. we can sit anyway we want to but moving regularly is best. "There is no correct posture"
Sitting down as a position is not bad for you, it’s the link to increased sedentary behaviour that is bad for us, not sitting per se.
The human body is a wonderfully unique system, with each of us being put together slightly differently. This means that there is subsequently a huge variation in posture. It’s natural and beneficial for us to all be slightly different therefore it makes no sense that there would be a "normal" or correct way to do anything. |
"Our spines are amazingly tough and strong"
Our spines even curve in different ways and there’s no such thing as a perfect spine shape.
Our spines are also amazingly tough and strong. They allow us a great amount of movement and can adapt brilliantly to what we ask of them. In fact movement is vital for our spines to be happy.
You do not need to have your posture assessed or have your posture realigned. This is not current or up to date health care. There is no one size fits all or a “normal” posture to adhere to.
Posture is not linked to pain. If you’re experiencing pain posture is probably the least likely cause and in most cases is not the thing that should be blamed or changed. We may in some circumstances modify your posture during rehab but really that’s about allowing symptoms to settle, not fixing the root cause of your pain. Invariably it’s a structure that is being worked harder than it’s able to manage so if we work to identify ways to increase that structure’s ability to manage, then we’ll be able to reduce your pain and at the same time make you stronger.
Just keep moving and adopt comfy postures that suit you. Your body has got your back.
